New World Umbral Shard Farm Explained – New World Guide
New world game has one of the a bit annoying mechanics, called an umbral shard. The item collection is one of the resources you need to collect in a certain number to bump up your expertise. It is something that you need at the later phase of the game, and still something considered to be hard to collect. But what exactly is Umbral shards?
What is it about?
Generally, you can call it as one of the resources you can gather to take an item with the higher gear score (similar to level, but way more complex). Basically the shard can work similar to currency, which allows you to equip and upgrade certain items.
But in the New World you collect the umbral shard simply to equip high leveled items, something from gear score of 590 to maximum of 625. It is also an item you use to bump up your expertise for a specific gear slot from 600-625.
As the gear score is higher, it also means you also need to have a high level. In this case, you must be in expertise level 600 to have a particular gear slot with the umbral shard. It even needs 590 gear score items to use the umbral shard.
How to use it?
Umbral shard only be used for a piece of equipment with gear score of 590 or above. You also need to be at 600 expertise or above. Umbral shards are basically used to “upgrade” the item, by right clicking the item.
Remember that you need the right amount of shard for the upgrade. Upgrading with umbral shard will upgrade your expertise as well, no matter the gear score you have in the slot. But using an umbral shard will bind the item to the player.
As much as you can gather the umbral shards to upgrade the item, but the collecting process is pretty tedious. It also demands a lot of times and number of shards, starting from 10 to thousand per level.
